Default Kmail and Proxy server

As I live in a 3rd world country where broadband is not possible (Rural
Germany!!) I have now got satelite broadband which needs to run through a
proxy server so the upstream is via phoneline and the downstream is via
sat. I have set the proxy server to forward requests for different web
services and most work OK. I can access my POP mail boxes on remote
servers, read and write to newsgroups and surf the net.

What I cannot do is use p2p networking, I cannot contact Gmail via pop from
Kmail and I cannot send mail from Kmail. Most important is mail sending
atm, I use an authorised SMTP server from my domain host, it has no
encryption and authentication method PLAIN this has always worked before
and still does if I connect from a windows box but via Kmail gives the
error message that type Plain is not supported. Using the 'check what the
server supports' button I am advised to use TLS and PLAIN but get the same
error message.

For POP connection to my hoster I put the proxy as host and the correct port
then it all works OK, but not for contacting GMail, I use a different proxy
port of course and get the error message 'could not connect to server' it
cannot connect to the proxy server for some reason.

Does anyone here have any experience with this sort of problem or any
suggestions?
