I have just installed SUSE Linux 10.1 on a system with a working Windows
XP. I live in an area without DSL or cable internet, so dial-up is my only option. I have a V92 US Robotics Faxmodem (model 5633) which works fine in XP, but is not recognized by Linux 10.1 I have searched the web and seen a lot of people having problems with modems in Linux. Does Version 10.1 not support USB modems? When I look at the modem using YaST, the help information on the left side of the window for modems says that USB ports are given the designation /dev/ttyACM0 or /dev/ttyACM1. However, changing this designation does not fix the problem. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help. New SUSE Linux user |

I've found that many modems are Winmodems. These are not
hardware-controlled, but software-controlled and are designed to work with Windows (better said, let Windows do the work for it). Have you checked to see what type the USR 5633 is? I have a USR 5610b that I bought ($11 on ebay) recently to replace the Winmodem I had been using. I've managed to get it to dial and connect, but not recieve once it connects. |
