I hope somebody can help me out here.
I have a IBM Thinkpad with wifi and normally I connect to a wifi network with static ip. Now I have to use a dhcp based network a few days a week and need to use xsupplicant and have to change all network settings to use it. The Yast configuration tool is very user unfriendly for this, it does not even support xsupplicant. How can I most easy switch the settings for wifi? Tim |

The wpa_supplicant is SUSE tool and you can find it on installation medium. > How can I most easy switch the settings for wifi? YaST Control Center -- System -- Profile Manager is used to enable different hardware profiles (configurations). It was many times recommended in situations like yours. Personally I never used it, but I never heard guys comming back and asking how to configure profiles, so it should be kind of straightforward. HTH -- Regards, Rajko M. |

The profile manager is only to switch between settings. This still means users have to find a way to manually configure the system. This requires to have good knowledge of the inner workings of SuSE. I had hoped SuSE was more userfriendly by now. But thank you for pointing out wpa_supplicant besides xsupplicant and the profile manager. |

SUSE is in many ways friendlier than others, but WiFi is new field with a lot of hardware companies using propriatory solutions that will disappear after some time when people get tired of buggie solutions and missing functionality, with no way out and start buying standard equipment. It happened so many times in last 20 years that I follow the market. My experience with SUSE, WiFi and HP laptop isn't good, but I don't blame SUSE, as HP is hardware vendor and has to provide driver for the device they sell, not SUSE. They included driver for preinstalled OS. Solution for people that have different operating system preferences doesn't exist, but that's story is for some other place, not the technical help group. -- Regards, Rajko M. |
