Default internet connection through external (ethernet) modem

I recently installed SUSE 10.0 on my home computer. My computer is
connected to the internet through an external DSL modem. When I am using
Windows XP (my previous OS), i can connect to the internet perfectly.
However, when I am using SUSE, it consistently connects to websites related
to SUSE (novell.com and opensuse.org are two that i've been to) but only
sporadically to other sites. it does not seem to make a difference whether
the firewall is on or not. i've tried changing network settings, changing
gateways and dsl ip addresses and such to my modem's ip address
(192.168.0.1) and nothing helps.

Which browser?

Try disabling IPV6 in KDE by going to Yast>System>/etc/sysconfig
Editor>Desktop>KDE_USE_IPV6 and change it to "no"

Also if this is with FireFox you can type:

about:config

in the address bar and then type ipv6 in the search bar and disable it
there.
