Default modem configured but not working

Thanks for the help in advance.
I have a external 3com us Robotics 56k voice faxmodem, with usb and serial
connections.
I have it using the usb connection (I don't have a serial cable to try).

suse 10 seen it ,I configure it, I have the plug on the task bar,but it does
not work.
Its like pppd is not linked to the modem or usb port.
