Default External modem recommendation

Hi,

Does anyone out there use an external analog dialup modem with which works
more or less out-of-the box with SUSE 10. If so, which one?

The reason I ask is that I have donated my old SUSE 10.0 box to a relative
who has only an analog dialup connection to his ISP. We tested two modems
he had previously used with Windows (one pre-war robotics something and one
Aceex 2814), but we were not able to make them work with SUSE 10.0.

My relative lives in a very rural area so he would have to mailorder the
modem. Therefore it would be nice to get a working model first time.

Cheers

I used to use an old Diamond Supra Express serial modem ( the one with
the built in answer machine and 2 meg of memory ) served me well for
around 2 years and as far as I know is still in service in Ireland
after someone bought it off me.

All ( AFAIK ) serial modems are hardware modems and do not need
drivers/modules to function.

You could probably pick one up cheap on e-bay.

Hmm, I suppose the problem is that I have never tried to use a modem for
dialing up an ISP in Linux before. I have used ISDN and later ADSL and both
these methods are set up with point and klick in YaST.

My relative's SUSE 10.0 knows about the modem but the response to ATZ and
the second default intit string is "modem does not answer" and "connection
script failed" (back translated from Norwegian).

We will probably have to dive into some config file. Is there a pointer to
some understandable documentation?

I BTW remember now that I have used the Aceex 2814 modem in Linux, not to
dial up to an ISP but as a fax modem via hylafax. The hylafax
"faxaddmodem" (something like that) script set up this modem for faxing so
I think it should be possible to use it for dialing an ISP as well.

Following a hint in another group we used the command
"wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf" (as root in a terminal).

After that the physical modem was automatically recognized and set up in
YaST and my relative only had to fill in in his ISP details to be
networked.
