Default Modem is not responding.

Hi there.

I am a new Suse Linux user and I have problems getting my modem started. I
have a laptop loaded with Win XP and Suse Linux 10.0. The modem is not
respopnding under Linux. The following error messages occur:
pppd[0]lugin passwordfd.so loaded
pppd[0]: ->WvDial:Internetdialer version 1.54.0
pppd[0]:Initializing modem
pppd[0]:Sending:ATM1
pppd[0]:Sending ATQ0
pppd[0]:Re-Sending ATM1
pppd[0]:Modem not responding
pppd[0]:Connect script failed
Status is: disconnected
pppd[0]: dies: Connect script failed

What can I do?

What model laptop and also do you know the make/model of modem?

Sounds like this is a winmodem and will need special drivers/modules.

Have a look on tuxmobil ( http://tuxmobil.org/mylaptops.html ) and see
if anyone has posted how to get it working for your specific model.

Default Re: Modem is not responding.

Thank you very much for your advice.

My modem is a Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem. I downloaded an update from the
Motorola website for Suse Linux 9.0 and I installed it on my laptop.
Unfortunately my modem is still not responding under linux (maybe because
the update was for linux 9.0 and I have 10.0).

Is there any other advice for my problem?

Greetings

Michael
