Default Networking using WEP, wireless router

I am using a D LInk wireless router. I am using WEP encryption. My laptop
uses linux and it connects to the internet using a wireless network card.
My Desktop uses windows and it is connected to the router using a hard
wire. My windows box cannot see my samba shares on my linux laptop but my
laptop can access shares on my windows box. When I set up the network card
on the laptop I had to specify a hexidecimal code to make the laptop
accessible to the internet. On the windows box I have never entered this
code. Is this the problem? How do I fix it? Thanks

Did you enable the Samba server in Linux? That's what makes shares
available.

As for that "hexadecimal code", I assume you're referring to the MAC
address. Why did you have to do that?

More likely it is the WEP key. If so, that is only for communications
between the Access Point and the laptop. Your desktop does not have to
know anything about it.

Well, I came home this evening and checked my file sharing and it worked.
I cant figure out why I was having trouble in the first place. But for
some reason or the other, now its working fine again. Thanks for your
input but it must have been just some glitch in windows. Bye
