Default Modem problems under suse 9.3

Hi there it seems that. for some reason i can not upload any thing.. it
always dies at about 1600000 bytes. does not mater what internet program I
use.. it really does not seem to be a modem problem It stay connected for
hours and I can download massive file with out problems. it only affects
uploads..

the modem is a agerea modem compatible with your rpm. and i tested the
modem it works fine in windows.. but for for some reason the modem hangs up
with error 16 always at about 1600000 Bytes.

does anyone know what the problem might be.. runing suse9.3 if I remeber
correctly it seem to work fine before the last update to the modem rpm
update.. maybe i should roll back and see if there is a difference..

Okay rolled back to the original driver.. but it exhibits the same problem.
now it cuts out at about average of 170 kb.. which is annoying i can not
upload any pictures via email or do any ftp tranfere. I notice in my first
post I had one to many zeros.. perhaps this is affecting other people
who are having email problems and using a modem, and they just did not
notice the modem disconnected..

a description of the behavour, during uploads:
it uploads for several moments, about 1 - 10 kbs worth of data then it
stalls for several moments (perhaps a second or two), then it uploads again
5 - 10 kbs then stalls again. then once it reaches around the 160 kbs the
modem disconnects error 16 ( which could be several minutes)

connection speed is 44000 ( to me it would seem to be a handshaking or
protocal problem - but normal download is un affected )

Just out of curiosity what happens if you upload and d/load at the same
time?

Does it still get to the 160 mark in the upload and bomb or does it go
past it while it is d/loading?

nope i tried that 160 kb upload is the killer. does not matter if I am
surfing or downloading. as soon as something uploads 160kb. the modem
disconnects

I just did an update a couple of days ago took 8 hours worked fine.. no
problems

but if I am downloading something then say send an email that over 120 -
160 kbs at the same timer it keep downloading until the email uploads to
120kbs - 160 kbs and then disconnect..

it only affects the in upload I am pretty sure it has to be a software
glitch of some form..

Hi sash,

Mmmmm... curiouser and curiouser, it does sound like it is a software
thing somewhere along the line.

Just another thing to try to pinpoint the problem, what happens if you
start 2 uploads of 100k each at the same time?

Did you revert back to the older module?

If so was there any difference?

Another thought ( just came to me while writing this ), are there any
messages in the logs ( /var/log/messages, warn, fail, boot, etc... ) to
point at IRQ problems or errors in the sound subsystem ( ALSA ).

Sound probs can cause wacky behaviour with some modems as they are
linked.

What soundcard do you have?

If it was me and the soundcard is onboard in I would disable in the BIOS
or if it is a card then remove it from the system just to see if that
made any difference.

Okay

i tried disabling the soundcard, I also tried disabling anything that shared
the same IRQ.. it still had the same effect.
the only thing I found out was, i believe some reported having this problem
with a agere modem several months ago, is if the modem is on the same IRQ
as the acpi then it connects with 44000 NOec then fails to connect after
several minutes..
any other sugestion

I check the error logs nothing out of the ordinary.. other then it say the
lt modem is tainted. but I assume that because i rolled back to the earlier
version..

Have you thought about giving the slamr modules for the modem?

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/smartlink/

Looks like the slmodem-2.9.9e-pre2.tar.gz might be the latest here.

I don`t know if this will work but it cannot harm, the documentation is
pretty good on how to compile and use.

Tainted just means it is a module that is not part of the official
kernel, you can ignore that message it is just for informational use
and does not indicate anything is wrong.
