I tried to configure a dial-up modem connection in SuSe 9.2 and a few weeks
ago in 9.3. I can connect to the internet and browse (using Firefox). I can receive emails. I can send email with the word test in the body and subject line. However any longer email will not be send. I tried with Kinternet and kde3networking-dialup. I use Thunderbird for email. Same problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Uli |

However I have received a further lead from someone else which I will try out over the weekend. The computer is an Asus Laptop which I use with an external Hardware modem through a USB to Serial converter. I have been told the problem might be with the flow control which is set to crtscts on the modem, but the harware flow control might not work through the USB to Serial Converter. If this does not solve the problem, I will try another mail client. Thanks Uli |

Kmail and Evolution had the same problem. With Kmail the progress indicator went each time to 91% before the transmission of the email stopped. Changes in flow control (hardware/software/none) made no difference it always went to 91%. When I deleted half of the email and tried to send it it went only to 87%??. Error message is timeout exceeded. Any suggestions would be appreciatet. Uli |

Although I would think you'd get an error message saying that the message couldn't be sent, this is one thing to look at. It sounds like it is trying to send but timing out when authentication isn't correct. Malke -- "I have a cunning plan..." |

A while ago I had a similar problem with my ISP when the had upgraded and changed what the mail server would accept and all my mails bounced until I chose the right encryption. If I set up the SMTP authentication I get the error message that this is not supportet by my ISP. The test button comes up with the same settings I had before. THe mail logs tell only that ppp connection was established, the DNS servers, IP addresses etc as if everything would be working fine. I can send a email with 1 line, with 10 lines the performance goes to 87% with 20 lines to 91% an email with two pictures attached even to 99%. The settings - as far as I can see - are the same as on my old desktop where I can do everythign in Windows 2000 and Redhat9. Is it a SuSE problem? Why no log when mail fails? the syslog-ng states "filter f_mailerr { level(err, crit) and facility(mail); };" I wonder if it makes a difference if I instead put "filter f_mailerr { level(err..emerg) and facility(mail); };" ? Any ideas would be appreciated. |

However in /var/log/messages there is sometimes the message "ip-up: fetchmail: no mailservers have been specified". I looked in the /etc/ppp/ip-up script but didn't find anything relevant. However I want to sent the mail per SMTP, I wouldn't need a mail server there. I went through all the settings again over the weekend but it did not make any difference. I still can send small emails (one line) bigger ones just stop somewhere through. I can see on the modem lights when it stops and that is it. However I found that the internet stopped downloading web pages too. I don't use internet much from home as I have braodband at work , the dial-up is just for the email mostly. So I did not notice it earlier. |
