The reason for this is that legally, Novell/SUSE is not allowed to include the support for those formats, as they are patent encumbered formats, unlike formats such as OGG Vorbis and OGG Theora. In order to be able to play DivX, MPEG, QuickTime etc. through Kaffeine, you need to install a version of Xine which has those capabilities. Obviously you won't be able to get such a thing from Novell/SUSE, you need to get it from somewhere else. That somewhere else could be the Packman package repository which contains various funny things for SUSE Linux, that Novell/SUSE is not allowed to distribute. To easily get Xine "fixed" I recommend that you use the SMART Package Manager instead of SUSE's own package management system (ZEN) which is still quite buggy. Instructions for installing SMART can be found here: http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=...ackage_Manager Once you have SMART installed, go to the KMenu (The green button with the chameleon menu in the lower left corner) and navigate to System --> Configuration, and select "Smart Package Manager". Now it will say that it has detected new "channels", I normally just say yes to all of them, as the ones that contain untested packages is disabled by default, but if you don't like saying yes to all of them, just be sure to say yes to enable the Packman channel. After saying yes to the last channel, Smart will pop up, hit the Reload button at the top of the program, this will download package information from the different repositories that Smart knows about. Once it's done downloading package information, hit the button that has a paper with a magnifying glass, and type in "libxine" as search keyword in the box that appears. Once you get some search results, look for "libxine" and right-click on it and select install, now click on the button with the gears, aka the Execute button, at the top of the program, it will ask you to confirm the changes, and then go off and download the new version of Xine and install it for you. You may also wanna install the Packman version of Kaffeine, which you do using the procedure you just used to upgrade Xine with. |

cliff-sheridan,
The one I like the most is Xine, but also MPlayer is very good. Just add Packman as an installation source, and you can use YaST to install the needed packages. Here's a very good list of repositories for Suse Linux 10.x http://en.opensuse.org/Package_Repositories -- ___________________________________________ Niclas Ekstedt, CNA/CNE/CNS/CLS Systems Engineer/NSC Sysop Telindus Göteborg AB Telindus. Hello Cliff, Have a look at the following URL, which worked perfectly for me http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/254 -- Regards, Frans Leerink |

I tried installing the python rpm pacages for suse 10.0 on the x86_64, and
the directory for python-xml for 10.0 is inoperable on the site given: http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=...ackage_Manager however I need to install that before I can continue, or before I try to install SMART. here is the URL I tried: ftp://ftp.belnet.be/mirrors/ftp.open...thon-xml-*.rpm do you know where I can get that program from? and would I have to start all over if I turned of my computer in the mean time? basically would I need to download the first python rpm program again? |

If you use 10.0 you don't need Smart, you can just open up YaST, select Installation Sources, click on add, and fill in this info: Protocol: HTTP Server Name: packman.unixheads.com Directory On Server: suse/10.0 Click OK, and let it add the repository, then click on Finish. Now go into Software Management and search for libxine1 and install it, then search for kaffeine, and set it to be upgraded and then click on Accept, and wait for a few minutes. I wanna stress that the above instructions is for SUSE Linux 10.0 ONLY, this will NOT work in 10.1 |

Actually I have the python program problem fixed, it turned out I already
had python-xml on my system now I have downloaded smart and run smart update, but now I cannot run smart install smart-gui mainly because durring smart update my computer failed to completely download some of the update files (because I am using dial up and I "timed out") now when I try to run smart install smart-gui I get an error that says: error: Configuration is in read only mode. I get the same error when I try to run smart update again what do I do? |
