Default Ripping to MP3

The SuSE documentation refers to ripping to MP3 format if you have a
supporting codec. Ogg works great, but has little utility off the computer
(unfortunately!). I found an MP3 codec called "notlame" (v. 3.96.1) that I
loaded as an RPM with YaST and used with KAudioCreator. It appeared to
work, but the computer could not play back the ".MP3" files created. I then
tried running it directly at the command prompt with the same results. I
also noted that Firefox (and who knows what else) stopped working after
this install.

Does anyone know of a source for MP3 codecs that are compatible with SuSE
10, whether open source or not? Thanks.

notlame should work just fine to create MP3s (I use notlame to transcode
from FLAC/OGG when necessary and it works great).

Do the MP3 files produced playback on your Linux machine? You may also
want to try the "file <filename>" command to see if it does indeed
output as an mp3 file.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm glad that notlame works on your machine.
Perhaps I am on the right track. The MP3 files it created would not play on
my machine under Linux. I have not had a chance to try them on external
players, but other MP3 files do work on my Linux install. I will try the
"file" command and see if the files really are MP3 (I am not at home to try
it right now).

I tried the 'file' command on the files and they were identified as MP3
type files. I then burned several to a CD and tried playing them in an
external MP3 player. They played okay. So, the playback problem is
apparently more of a Linux or KDE problem. I have only tried the KDE
players, but something like RealPlayer might work. Thanks for the help!

Do other sounds like KDE system sounds playback OK? If not, you may want
to check that it's not a sound card or speaker issue.

Also, the fact that MP3 is a licensed format may have something to do
with it, it's possible a recent opensuse release moved MP3 decoders to
the non-free section, though I'm not sure on this.

You could also try using mplayer or xmms to play the files.

Hello,

I had a couple of month ago also a problem with plying MP3 files and in my
case it turned out that the filename of the MP3 file should end on ".mp3"
