I'm using SUSE 10.0 on my Compaq X1000 Laptop.
After a recent update, my KMenu panel is far wider than it has been, and i can't figure out how to narrow it. When I click on the menu button, the panel takes up almost a third of the display width. It works allright, but I don't care for the extra width. How do I shrink it back? Thanks, Bob. |

Bob, How does the menu display the names, is it just by application or do you get a description as well, this can make the menus wide. This can be turned off in Control Centre>Desktop>Panels>Menus and change the K Menu item format. You can also turn off the side image to make it slimmer. Or is it that the fonts are too big making the menu wider? This can be adjusted in Appearance & Themes>Fonts>menu. Does that help? -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. The fonts are 10 point and not overly large. > This can be adjusted in Appearance & Themes>Fonts>menu. > > Does that help? > No, it does not. Thanks for your help. At least I also have Suse 9.3 install on my desktop to compare this to. Bob. |

Bob, Go back to the menu config in Control Centre>Desktop>Panels and set the QuickStart Menu Items to 0 ( zero ) and see if that does anything. I was thinking along the lies that there is an invisible entry somewhere which is loooooooooooooooong and throwing the whole of the menu size out, the menus should adapt dynamically to the longest entry and sub menus the same but if all menus and sub menus show the same width no matter the length of the items names in the menu then it does not appear to be auto resizing. Also you can try and compare the contents of /home/<user>/.kde/share/config/kickerrc from 10 and 9.3 if they are both the same KDE version you might spot something there. If I adjust the number down to 3 or less the control centre doesn't show up and the width is normal. I can't seem to delete it from the list, either. Thanks, Bob |

Do not see that here Bob and I have my Most Used set to 8 and control centre is there on all machines ( ??? ) weird. Have you changed icons/themes/styles or anything like that? You might be better bugging this on kde.org or searching there to see if anyone has reported the same thing. Have you tried as another user to see if it is just something in your home dir that could be doing this? What version of KDE are you using, the one that comes with Suse or 3.5.1? Only I notice that there were newer kdebase files ( and others ) in the supplementary dirs on the servers yesterday, I installed them through the apt repos and for me they do seem zippier. I have mostly KDE 3.4.2-26 installed, although I see some 3.5 updates from the supplementary repository. What's the best way to back level this all to the SUSE 3.4 KDE? Bob. |

Would it not be better to Upgrade to the full 3.5.1 instead of downgrading though? Or is that not an option for you? HTH -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. Wales, UK Novell Support Forums SysOp |

And anyway what's on the DVD (not CD) is 3.4.2, not 3.5. (I've installed from the DVD from the January 2006 Linux Magazine) Bob. |

Here is a page that give info on how to update online: http://desktoplinux.com/articles/AT8795467710.html There are more docs on Novell and Opensuse on how to do this but I find it hard to find the right page with a quick search, between you, me, and the gatepost I do mot like the Novell site search as it is very hard to narrow down the crieria, my personal comment though :-) Plus I use apt for all my extra software as I am mostly 64bit here and some stuff is just not available to me through the Yast sources.
