An annoying problem with suse 10.0 and kde 3.5.1 (with all the latest
updates): In a vaio laptop, often when I press Log Out and brings up the choice menu and I select Shutdown, the machine starts do so (closes the dialog) but then does no shut down. Trying to click again the same K menu entry to log out, does nothing (mouse working fine, but no way to exit kde) so I have resorted to ctr-alt-backspace to exit X, then log as root and finaly shutdown from the command line. I am not sure this is the ideal way of doing it, but what else can I do? It has happened several times. Thanks for any suggestions, -G- |

What do you have running in the tray when you log out? Here if I try and logout with akregator running I get a crash dialog ( this is a known bug on KDE ) maybe you are getting an app crash but the dialog is not showing. Try right clicking each running app in the tray and quit manually and see if you get a crash dialog or quit one then try and logout if it still hangs then reset the X server and try another app till you find the one that is causing the hang ( if it shows up ) Or have a look in the file in /var/log/messages and see if anything is printed there that might give you a clue to what is hanging the system, obviously this is not a system hang but some app is causing problems with KDE. Now of these I know definitely that akregator causes a crash whether I manually close or leave it running on logout, I sometimes ( not very often ) get another quick crash on logout and I think it is caused by the kmail applet but am not 100% sure, it happens so rarely that I have not looked into it yet, I cannot test by trial and error on this one as it is not reproducible 100% of the time. However I also have a truck load of applets in a child bar on top of my screen so it could be anyone of those as well ( 2 mixers, one for each soundcard, Kweather, binary clock, keyboard status, online dictionary, kpager2, solseek ) I am a sucker for eyecandy :-) + xplanet as an animated backdrop, gkrellm and a couple of superkaramba things. </mini boast> > I will try these and post back. > Many thanks for the suggestions. > > Cheers, > No probs, keep us posted. -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. > No probs, keep us posted. It seems that it was kshowmail after all :-/ I like kshowmail because it allows me to delete manually messages in my work mail server remotely when I am away. Unfortunately kmail does not let me download the headers to then delete some and download others. One can delete the mail after download, or set to not download (using the filter option), but not to delete without downloading (or at least I have not found the way to do so). I asked for this functionality to be added, but it has not been implemented (before anybody suggests it, no, I am not knowledgable enough to submitt a patch). Kshowmail seems not to be maintained anymore and so I am using the version for 9.x (which still works fine) but seems to crash when quitting. Cheers, -G- |
