Default USB 2.0 drivers

I have a Belkin PCI card with 2 USB-2 ports and 2 firewire ports. When I
transfer files onto a USB external drive, they only move at 2.5 Mb/sec,
when I would expect 12. Are there some USB 2 drivers that are not getting
loaded? I'm running a bog standard, ftp download, OSS SUSE 10.0 with the
KDE desktop.

Hi Bob,

WHat is the USB Chipset on the Belkin PCI Card? I am not aware of any
specific USB2 cards that have problems but it might assist in
troubleshooting your problem if this was known.

Merry Christmas,

Bob,

Issue :

lsmod

in a console and see if the ehci_hcd module is loaded.

If there is only either ohci_hcd or uhci_hcd let me know and I will show
you how to fix it.

Just a comment, I have a belkin PCI usb2 card installed with two ports and
an internal port, no firewire. It works fine. No special drivers. Model
FSU219.

Bob,

This is not much help but just an observation at the moment until I can
get my brane working again.

Last week I was forced to do a fresh install of 10 ( power cut, bad UPS,
mangled disk, say no more ) and have also noticed that USB2 writes are
incredibly slow to memcards here ( 2-3k ), now this was not the case
with my old 10 install where reads and writes were fast.

However my old 10 was heavily modified with self compiled kernels and
updated to the latest "beta" stuff and also from the "unstable"
branches of apt.

I also have noticed that once again my USB peripherals ( bluetooth
dongle etc..) has stopped being initialised during boot, this is
something that has happened before and was cured with a newer version
of the kernel so I think it is all related to that.

I will try and see which kernel version I used last time to get USB
stable but cannot promise that it will be for a few days as we have
been inundated with family till after New Year and I cannot get the
time at the moment.

If anyone else has a fix then please jump in here.

Hi Bob,

Have not forgotten you but am now seeing completely different results
here with exactly the same settings.

Over the last few days i have been using a card reader with different
mem cards and all transfers of large files are fine and run at around
128k sec, it is the small file transfer that is the problem with the
sync`ing after each write that slows down the performance, at least
that is what it looks like to me.

I can consistently copy an 8 meg file @ 120k to three different types of
mem card but if there are lots of little ones that make a total of 8
meg then it takes ages.

If you disable the sync then it works a lot faster however then there is
the problem of losing data if the stick is removed without manually
sync`ing or unmounting the drive.

Hi Mark,

Yes, I've come to much the same conclusion, having picked up a thread on the
bugzilla website (bug no. 105871) - apparently the problem with sync
slowing down writes to USB 2.0 devices is mentioned in the ReadMe file
which is offered for perusal just after installation. I tend to speed read
these things, but forgot about it when my son noticed how slow transfers
were.

I too have disabled sync, but would be happier when this is fixed.
