Default problem with OpenSuse and Acer Aspire notebooks

Hello,
I'm a french user of OpenSuse 10.0 with an acer apsire 1692 WLMI notebook.
The problem is that when I launch the screen shutdown as if it was
disconnected but all the ther functions go. For the moment I use an
external monitor connected on the vga port of the laptop but it is not easy
to use.
How can I solve this problem?

Thank you in advance for the answer.

The most likely cause of this is that the refresh rate of you graphics
card is too high for your screen, as you have a monitor setup you can
use Yast in KDE to alter the refresh rate by choosing the vesa or an
LCD model of monitor with a specified refresh of 60hz, just make sure
that you choose a resolution that both your screen and monitor can
display.

*Important* make sure you *test* the settings before saving, if both
screens go blank on the test then leave the machine for 30 seconds and
it will revert back to the old screen.

I try your idea but it doesn't work, i tested with an other windows manager
and it doesn't work as with Kde. The screen which permit to users to choose
the windows manager to laucnh can't be launch. After this test I finally
conclude that was the Xservver that not recognize the screen of my
notebook. If you know another solution (or an other system such as the
Xserver) I will accept it with pleasure.
Thank for your previous answer.

Well in that case you need to boot to runlevel 3 with just the laptop
screen ( disconnect the external monitor ) and reconfigure with sax
like this:

boot to runlevel 3 by adding the boot parameter to the grub boot
screen, on the screen with the countdown marker and choice of OS`s
press F2 ( I think ) and a parameter line will appear where you can add
additional commands that are passed to the kernel on boot, so to get to
runlevel 3 with no X server just type:

init 3

( just the number "3" on its own would have the desired effect as well
but adding the init just reminds you what it is for )

when you get to the login prompt login as root and enter roots password
then type:

sax2 -l -r

this will start the graphics in "L"owres and "r"e-initialise the
hardware detection and see if you can re-configure you monitor from
there, you need to choose a *vesa* monitor or LCD with the right size
and a refresh rate of 60hz.

I tried to reinitialized hadware detection with only the laptop
screen but I have nothing. The Xserver that is launch by sax2 doesn't
works. When sax launch it, the screen shutdown shortly after without I
being able to see anything.
I have an another question: during the installation of opensuse, the laptop
screen works fine. How can it be?

Try these params with sax:

sax2 --vesa 0:640x480@60hz

or

sax2 -l -m 0=radeon

( not too sure on that last one, I am no ATI expert sorry )

The install uses a different way of putting graphics on the screen,
there is no X server running during install ( sort of anyway )

Just found this at tuxmobil ( http://tuxmobil.org/acer.html ), I know it
refers to fedora but it shows that there can be a problem with the
graphics setup.

http://www.aalbiol.upv.es/ACER.html

I had not realised that it has a PCIe chipset in there, you kght be
better using the external monitor and grabbing the ATI drivers and
installing them, maybe they are needed for the onboard screen ( seems
funny to me but stranger things have happened at sea )

Here is a link to the ATI readme on the Suse server :

http://www.suse.de/~sndirsch/ati-installer-HOWTO.html

That is the only server I could get to here at the moment that has the
doc.

The first command that you gave me,(sax2 --vesa 0=640x480@60Hz [I don't
"Hz" at the end because it don't recognize it if I had understood correctly
the error message]) doesn't works and the second command works but I had
nothing on the screen. I saw the links in your second message about the ati
driver but I installed it before and nothing change. For the link which
talk about acer and fedora I don't know if I can replace the Xorg.conf file
by the one that is on the website. I past the content of the Sax log file
that I saw after the first command(I don't know if everything is necessary):

Sorry that "Hz" was a typo on my side, it should not have been there.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Is that a typo or did you try 50Hz by mistake, 50hz will never work it
should be 60hz.

^^^^^^^^^^

That should be at least 50-60 at the moment it is telling the X server
that *only* a 50hz refresh rate is possible for the monitor which will
be out of range, if you change it to 50-60 then at least it has a
choice of frequencies to choose from in the range.

No screens because it cannot get a size with a good refresh rate.

When I tried 50Hz it was not a typo mistake, I tried it just to test it. I
retyped the command correctly: sax2 --vesa 0:640x480@60 but I had nothing
again. In the SaX.log file I saw that the type of monitor is "crt" I don't
know if it is important but if SaX recognize the lcd monitor as a crt can
that distort the continuation?
