Default Samba file permissions

Hi,

I used Suse 9.2 successfully with Samba shares, but in 9.3 I have a problem.
When I access my Samba shares via Konqueror (as in smb:/FileServer) I am
asked for a username and password and when given I get the file access
rights I am expecting. When I try to mount the same drives at the console
(using mount -t smbfs -o username,password service mount_point) I get read
access, but no write access; all the files are listed as being owned by
'root' when I know they aren't.
Can someone explain why the different methods of access in 9.3 give
different permissions, and how to resolve this so that I can work with
files on my server again!

TIA
