Default Sep 14th answer to Loss of sound in KDE (Rajko M.)

I was provided the download server and a readme file on the packages needed
to update to Xorg-X11 so I can install KDE 3.4.2 on SuSE 9.1. The answer
also mentions some planning and manual work needed to be done first. I've
downloaded the files, read the readme and am ready to proceed but I cannot
find documentation on the pre install work needed. Can you point me to some
document.

I did get the sound working with a fix found in CoolSolutions.

I'm relatively new to Linux and would be greatful for any additional
information.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Russ,

Thinking again, some manual work may be quite daunting task for people not
familiar with text mode.

I mentioned that this is not standard system update and there are few
references found on google with search query for "XFree86 to xorg" and most
of them are from last year when xorg was new and newest SuSE was 9.1.

Standard, with lesser effort and more appropriate for linux novice, would be
to update to newer version of SuSE that has xorg as default. Last is Open
SuSE 10, released few days ago and can be found on http://www.opensuse.org,
or many SuSE mirrors in opensuse directory.

It can be long lasting task in resolving dependencies that can and up in
system that is quite similar to some newer version, and even than not that
good tested and stable. One of references reports KDE crashes. Have you
ever used fvwm window manager?

Linux is fine system, but it is composition of many programs and libraries
where even versions play important role, otherwise programs refuse to start
or crash. That is where companies like Novell/SuSE jump in. They make
composition (distribution), test, adjust particular programs and libraries
to work togheather and release it as whole. The task they do before every
release is far beyond one man band.

Altough you already have xorg and KDE files (invested download time), it is
still good idea to rethink, as additional work is for advanced linux user
that has some experience using command line tools like rpm, mc, text mode
yast, SaX2, etc. Even than results can be way below expected.

Please let me know what is your decision.

Rajko.
