Dear Sirs,
last week I bought Suse Linux9.3 and installed it at home on my ShuttleX PC SB51G. When I had finished the installation, I found that the Monitor is randomly switched off and on when KDE is active. Sometimes I think it happens more often, when the mouse is moved often. But it also happens when I only work with the keyboard. My first idea was to change the driver of the Monitor, because there is a standard vesa driver automatically installed. But it is hard to find a fitting one. I have a Fujitsu Siemens SCENICVIEW P20-1. My second idea was to find a fitting parameter for /etc/X11/xorg.conf and also change the driver of the graphic-interface. But this is also hard. Is there someone who can help me? Best regards Hans-Günter Horter |

How often depends on current graphic on the screen. To check you can try to use Ctrl-Alt-<Plus_on_numeric_pad> to cycle trough configured resolutions, and check is there any that is more stable, than the present one. > > My first idea was to change the driver of the Monitor, because there is a > standard vesa driver automatically installed. If you don't have manufacturers driver disk, you can try to download driver from Siemens web site: http://www.fujitsu-siemens.pt/produc...iew_p20-1.html Unzip the file and copy P20-1.inf and P20-1.ICM to floppy or CD-RW Start YaST display configuration, and when you are in monitor setup, select properties. You will see button "Manufacturer Disk ...". Insert floppy (CD), press OK and monitor should be configured in few seconds. > > My second idea was to find a fitting parameter for /etc/X11/xorg.conf and > also change the driver of the graphic-interface. But this is also hard. That option you can use if above with manufacturer disk fails for some reason. Technical data are here: http://212.66.5.9/index.cfm?fuseacti...content&lid=80 You can access them from same web site used for driver. > > Is there someone who can help me? > > Best regards > > Hans-Guenter Horter HTH -- Regards, Rajko. |

But the monitor is still switched off and on. My feeling is that its not so often now as before the monitor driver reinstallation and it seems to be more often when mouse moves or some animation is going on on the screen. As mentioned before, there is only one resolution shown in SaX2: 1600x1200 75kHz 60Hz. This is monitors highest possible resolution as shown in the handbook. There is an onscreen information display possible, too. It shows me sometimes 1600x1200 75kHz 58Hz or 1600x1200 75kHz 56Hz. Where is a parameter to set frequencies? Sometimes monitor is even flickering when user and password is required and during the whole login procedure and afterwords. Mostly I restart PC when I see this. My neighbour lent me his 15 inch NEC Flatscreen for test. This worked without any problem. > > > > My second idea was to find a fitting parameter for /etc/X11/xorg.conf and > > also change the driver of the graphic-interface. This time I have two sets of mouse and keyboard. One set is composed out of a wireless mouse and a wireless keyboard and a receiver and transmitter unit. This set made problems made problems during the installation of SUSE9.3 so I substituted it against a simple optical Logitech wheelmouse and a Cherry keyboard. The wireless equipment was much more comfortable. Is it possible to substitude it again? But I don't know what consequencies it has because of my monitor problem. |

In xorg you should see: <<snip from my xorg>> Section "Monitor" Option "CalcAlgorithm" "CheckDesktopGeometry" DisplaySize 406 305 HorizSync 28-107 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "P1500" Option "DPMS" VendorName "CORNERSTONE" VertRefresh 50-160 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection <<pins>> you could always limit the vertical refresh by putting some thing like 60-61 and see if that helps, also make sure you have the "DisplaySize" entered, this is not always present so just add the width and height in mm. If the above gives you a black screen then can you post your /var/log/xorg.0.log please, as this should have the detected rates and also a bit more info on exactly what X thinks should be the correct values, maybe the auto detection is a little off for your chipset. Don`t forget to backup your xorg.conf first by making a copy in the /etc/X11 dir called something like bak-xorg.conf or whatever so that you can just rename it to get you old settings back. > > Sometimes monitor is even flickering when user and password is > required and during the whole login procedure and afterwards. Are the wireless models USB? if that is the case then have you enabled "dos" or "legacy" support mode for the USB in your BIOS, this allows USB keyboards and mice to function, some boards will not even allow you to get into the BIOS to change this with a USB keyboard so it is best to enable it first with a PS/2 keyboard before you plug them in, or use a USB -> PS/2 converter ( these normally come with the keyboard/mouse ) I always use these as it seems a waste to not use the ports as they are designed for it, also it frees up the USB ports and saves overloading the USB power if you have more peripherals connected, motherboard USB can only supply a comparatively small amount of power to peripherals and this can cause problems if you have too many trying to draw power for stuff, that is why it is always best to put things like USB powered scanners and wifi dongles in a powered USB hub ( you might see messages about "overcurrent" if too much is being drawn ). Animation means lower frame rate, but it shouldn't come to the monitor. I'll wait for answer to Mark's posting, to see what kind of video adapter is in the game. Noticed problems when you moving the mouse or using keyboard can be traced to moments when CPU is serving interrupts. CPU can be hyperthreading, multigigahertz, last word of power consumption technology, but it can't make up for interrupt controller that few moments to long is waiting to decide who is trying to get CPU attention. Please check (as root, in console): # cat /proc/interrupts <<snip>> > As mentioned before, there is only one resolution shown in SaX2: > 1600x1200 75kHz 60Hz. Horizontal is few lines above. Don't forget advice to backup xorg.conf before any changes. That section could be place for fast test cycle using manual changes and restart the X server to see if it helps, but when you are sure that you have one that is good, go to YaST and repeat the same to be sure that font sizes etc. is adjusted too. > Sometimes monitor is even flickering when user and password is required > and during the whole login procedure and afterwords. Mostly I restart PC > when I see this. What happens after rebooting? Works fine? > My neighbour lent me his 15 inch NEC Flatscreen for test. This worked > without any problem. What screen resolution was used for NEC? On 15" it couldn't be 1600x1200. Fujitsu-Siemens can be bad, but I remember Siemens as dependable, even over-engineered computers. You can lower resolution to 1200x800@60Hz manually using YaST (SaX2). That can help to stabilize picture, but can't tell who is the culprit for the problems, because lesser pixels to handle is good for all CPU, video adapter and monitor. <<snip>> > This time I have two sets of mouse and keyboard. I don't use wireless, but I've installed linux on computers equipped with wireless mice, where receiver was connected trough mechanical adapter USB -> Mouse port, and there was no problems at all. I don't know is there on the market some kind of wireless mice that have receiver that needs software driver loaded in main memory to interpret data, but if you can't get it to work with linux than it can be the case. I will test this next time. You are right. It wasn't possible to adjust such a high resolution with a 15 inch monitor. I think it was 1028x768. > > This time I have two sets of mouse and keyboard. I suppose the only real way of finding out is to put that monitor on another computer and see how it handles the same 1600x1200. I don`t suppose you have Windows on there as well and can test the monitor with the windows drivers? just to see if it is in fact the linux side as well? Or can you take it round your neighbour`s to see how it performs there? HTH -- Mark Twixt hill and high water N. Wales, UK Novell Support Forums SysOp |

My neighbour's graphics adapter is an older one. It doesn't support this high resolution. > > HTH > -- > Mark > Twixt hill and high water > N. Wales, UK > Novell Support Forums SysOp > |
