It just took 17 seconds to open an Open Office Word Processor document on my 1.6MHz SUSE 9.2 system. Than is about what it usually takes, As you say, this is pretty slow compared to MS Word. In my view this sluggishness of Open Office is a substantial problem. Although I use it at home, it really would not be usable with the very large documents we have at work. Apart from Open Office, I don't find the rest of my Linux desktop sluggish. KDE takes a while to start, but then I only start it once a day! Firefox, KMail, KNode and KDevelop all perform just fine. -- Chris Gordon-Smith London http://www.simsoup.info |

Did you know there are settings in Open Office to make it faster to work with? I fact you can make your entire Linux desktop faster by tweaking a few things. Linux is very flexible like that. YOu can bend it at will however you like--not so with MS. Also consider if you are opening a MS Word doc which will require a translation first to OO format for dispay to you. So to be fair, open a native format OO document. I think you will find that after making some adjustments that the speed is very comparible. One thing you should notice is that the Linux desktop is better at a fraction of the cost of the Windows. It seems a fair bit faster than under KDE, even without the default "quickstarter" thing running -- and that improves it quite a lot, too. Sad but true.
