There should be an option to repair the bootloader.

With out sounding too stupid.

I boot from the CD and select Boot Rescue System. I select English
then the
PC boots. It prompts Rescue Login: I enter root with no password and
it
stops at the Rescue:~# prompt.

No menu is displayed and I haven't a clue what to enter to fix the
boot
loader.

You should select new install go through the initial setup screens and

finally you will be offered the option to repair the already installed

system. Select repair grub.

Thanks, the problem was SATA. It had somehow reverted to Normal. I had
tried
switching it back to combination but that didn't fix it. Setting to
combination and repairing the boot loader fixed it.
