With out sounding too stupid.
I boot from the CD and select Boot Rescue System. I select English then the PC boots. It prompts Rescue Login: I enter root with no password and it stops at the Rescue:~# prompt. No menu is displayed and I haven't a clue what to enter to fix the boot loader. You should select new install go through the initial setup screens and finally you will be offered the option to repair the already installed system. Select repair grub. -- Freek |

Thanks, the problem was SATA. It had somehow reverted to Normal. I had
tried switching it back to combination but that didn't fix it. Setting to combination and repairing the boot loader fixed it.
