I had a similar experience with my Geforce FX5700. A transparent
borderless
aterm running *****X may look extremely shiny but currently the
performance
is too poor for daily use. I expect to see great things from this
extension in the future though.

Presumably you've already included the
Option "Composite" "Enable"
line to the xorg.conf file to get translucency working.
But that doesn't get the hardware acceleration going - and you need it
or
everything is very slow!
Try adding
Option "RenderAccel" "True"
to the device section of the file.

Already got that there. I should point out that when I say it was too
slow
I don't mean glacially slow but rather just slow enough to stop it
being
enjoyable. It's close, just not quite there though.
