Is the timing "every 15 hours" or just somewhere about there, reason
is
if it is spot on every 15 then you might have a cron job setup ( not
likely but just a thought )

You could have a look at .xsession-errors in your home dir or the
other
log files in:-

/var/log/faillog
/var/log/warn

etc....

one way of monitoring it is to have top running and see if anything is

eating your memory up slowly and reaches a peak at around 15 hours and

the machine locks.

Or have gkrellm running and keep an eye on your mem and procs in
realtime to see if anything is multiplying.

Are you using the raid controller?

How are you off for disk space?

Are there any "large" log files that could be filling up your drive?

Just a couple of things for you to look at

Hi and thank you very much for answering,

well, "every 15 hours" was just an approximation.

Memory usage seems to be ok. I use a real-time
memory monitor. According to it my memory is full
used for caching.

Disk space is ok, too: 10% free, that is 10GB.

I have to use the promise controller. I do it
through the sata_promise kernel module.

I will start now inspecting the log files
mentioned by you.

Thank you,
Marc

hello,

I remarked something very strange. When I play the
KDE game KBounds, the system freezes very soon.
Even if I pause the game and do other works.
After a few minutes everything freeze.

The /var/log/* files contain nothing important to
my problem. :-(

Marc

Anything in the .xsession-errors log file in your home dir?

A good way of monitoring the log files of your choice is to have
kwatch
running ( should be in System>Monitor>Kwatch menu ) this little app
monitors multiple files of your choice in near real time, so you can
have the window open and see if any messages come up, you could of
course use ktail and others but this one is the pretty easy to set upand have running.

I started kwatch and monitored the log files.
Unfortunately without success.

But take a look to this funny thing. After my
machine freezed I could log in to it through ssh
from another computer (c2). I could reboot my
broken server. Than I logged in again through ssh
-X and started kbounce (this is the right name of
the game) on the server but with the X output on
c2. After a while (2-3 min.) the server crashed
totally. It is definitely on account of the game
because without it I can use my server for hours.

I have on the server a nvidia card. But this
shouldn't be important as long as the X output is
done on another computer?!

So, very strange things happen. A simple game
(without any 3D accel.) can destroy my whole
system.

Anyway, thank you very much for your effort.

I have not played that game, will give it a go if I can find it, it
might be a bug in the game.

If I find anything wrong with it I will let you know.

Take care.

It is a very simple game. On my second computer I
get no problem. That's not a positive thing about
Linux/SuSE, if a simple application can kill a
whole system :-( .

I think I will post another message specially for
the problem with the game. But I want to do
another test before.

Thanks,
Marc

Compiling the kernel didn't help. :-( And
Slackware crashes, too. I guess I have a hardware
problem. But running memtest for a couple of
hours showed no errors.

Another thought:

I suppose you could try running kbounce using strace and piping the
output to a file, however it might get quite large if it runs for anyconsiderable time.
