"VPN" is a rather generic term that covers a range of protocols and
implementations; see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VPN

What software you need depends on the particular protocol use for the
VPN
you're trying to access and may even depend on what protocol
implementation
is used "on the other side". Without information about the protocol,
there's
not much people can do to help you.

As I see in my Windows configuration dialog of VPN-connection (I
already
have configured connection), I use PPTP VPN protocol with CHAP
password
checking.
So which client can you offer to me?

Nixen,

I am not official Novell support, but can offer a few pieces of info. You can do PPTP or IPSEC on Linux. You can also do GRE, and others.

As you know, IPSEC is really the most heavily used today, PPTP,
GRE,L2TP
and others will and are probably fading with time.

You can also use SSH in some cases, which appears to be the newest
method for various reasons.

Covering PPTP:
http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/
http://www.sigpipe.org/~me/vpn/pptp.html
http://neurosis.hungry.com/~ben/software/pptp.html

covering PPTP server:
http://www.poptop.org/

IPSEC:
http://www.freeswan.org/

Note that Freeswan is also compatible with many IPSEC implementations,

http://www.freeswan.org/freeswan_tre...c/interop.html
So as J.H.M. stated, you need to define what you want to accomplish, what you want to connect. It really depends on what you want to
connect
to. It sounds like you want the Linux machine to do what your windoze

machine dones, so you will need PPTP client, above. Whether it works
or
not depends on the implementations on the server.

Everything really useful, Linux can do.

Hope this helps.

*EVERY SINGLE* client and server for PPTP in Linux stores your
passwords
locally in clear text. So do the IPsec tools when I last reviewed them
about
a year ago for my previous workplace, but those don't usually use your

normal user login password name and password on the remote side.

The PPTP clients basically need re-write's to have the user type in
their
password when starting the session, rather than storing it locally in
clear
text. I've written to the authors of various of these software
packages, and
was told "if you can't trust your machine's files, you shouldn't run a
VPN
on it". Trying to explain the concept of a local root exploit or of
having
your laptop with its clear-text user passwords stolen didn't seem to register.

No, that's at the industry scale for site-to-site among Linux or
highly
security conscious site-to-site configurations. The trivial plug&play
nature
of PPTP with Microsoft's VPN servers and built-in Windows VPN clients
is
keeping it far, far more heavily used in the traveling latpop and
mobile
desktop community, which makes up a lot more of the user base.

Oh, yes, it's extremely useful for limited access port tunneling for
VNC
sessions or CVS access or even some web access. It just won't handle
UDP, so
DNS and NFS and some other very useful services can be difficult to
configure.
