Have a look in /var/log/xorg.log and see if there are any error
messages
when it tries to load the GLX extension.

Also rename your XF86config in /etc/X11/ and make a symlink with the
same name that points to xorg.conf in the same dir, that way if you
use
sax2 or Yast you will be sure that the right one is altered.

I found that what was happening was that sax2 was writing to the wrong

config and the GLX was not getting enabled even though the Nvidia wasloading, you might have to mess with the agpgart stuff as well but see

how you get on with the above first first.

Nope, no errors related to GLX.

Already done. This is how it's been running for a few months now.

agpgart loads as expected. I tried setting "NvAGP" "0" to see if this
helps
but no it doesn't. Also, I tried not loading "glx" but this doesn't
help
either.

I've attached portions of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Thanks for the fast response.

Well that looks ok to me, I cannot think of anything else that I did
to
cure my crashes at the same time except update KDE, I had been running

the beta of 3.4 for a while and went to the full release.

Those errors used to show when running my TV card and the machine
would
lock, but this was down to the wrong X config file being read and GLXnot getting initialised. I also had to modprobe the TV card module
in /etc/init.d/boot.local as udevd was messing it up.

Ah, also I recompiled a 2.6.11 kernel ( used the source from one of
the
"Kernel of The Days" ) to make it an Athlon 64bit specific with
pre-empt and took out the rivafb + some other non essential stuff.

Other than keeping everything upto date with apt I cannot think of
anything else.

Since doing all the above this machine has been absolutely rock solid24/7 @ 100% ( except for one crash which was not terminal and was down

to me messing )

I wonder if you might get any joy going over to the smp kernel even
though you only have 1 CPU, it could be down to some timings or
something.

If I remember anything else that might have an affect I will post
again.

This is not a KDE issue. I get keyboard freezes in twm, enlightenment,

gnome and xfce.

I'm running the smp kernel now, thanks for the suggestion, No joy
since I
see keyboard freezes here as well.

Does it happen in runlevel 3 at the terminal or is it only when X is
running?

Try dropping to a term with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and leaving your X session
open,
do some stuff on the terminal and see if you have problems there, if
you do then next time don`t start the X server and see if it happens
then, this would eliminate Xorg, that would only leave the underlyingkey handler or hardware probs such as a loose fitting keyboard PS2
plug/socket.

Unless you dual boot and the "other" OS works fine?

The underlying kernel is rock solid. Even after the keyboard freezes,
I can
always ssh in from some other machine and kill X. If I stay at
runlevel 3,
I never see any keyboard freezes. Also, X must be the culprit since it

rapidly starts using more of the CPU and eventually maxes out the CPU.

I never see keyboard freezes in runlevel 3. The reported behavior only

happens in X.

Unfortunately, yes, Windows XP runs fine on the same machine. My kid
who's
7 now thinks that linux is an unstable mess whereas XP is a
"professional"
OS which never crashes.

Well I think it comes down to X then, you could always re-install theXorg packages to see if it might have missed one or one is corrupt.

Sort of getting to the "clutching at straws point here" :-)

I removed the AGP nvidia videocard since I was getting tired of the
crashes. Back to the onboard ATI Rage 4MB card. Haven't had a freeze
so
far. It has been a few hours. Usually (and in KDE) I get a keyboard
freeze
in about 10 minutes.

After this experience, I'd say that the Tyan S2462 motherboard is
probably
the culprit.
