When you get to that point, press Alt-F10 immediately *after*
selecting
to continue and see if any of those log messages gives a hint . . .

Thanks for the ALT-F10 tip!

Ok, I found the source of my problem. The kernel on the SUSE 9.2
floppy I've booted from does not support the file system type I've
selected for my root file system.

After stopping to clear my head, I realized that I should just check
the /var/log directory for clues. (I'm not sure why I did not think
of this sooner).

After I received the "Could not mount partition /dev/hda2 to /mnt/"
message, I toggled to the command prompt (ATL-F2), went to the
/var/log/YaST2 directory and looked in the y2log file (tail y2log).
An error message in the file reported that the kernel did not
support the reiser file system. I repartitioned /dev/hda2,
specifying an ext3 file system and attempted the install again.
This time I found that the kernel did not support that file system
either.

The third attempt worked after I specified an ext2 file system for
/ (root).

I'm not sure why the kernel on the installation floppy did not support

all of the file system types that are offered by YaST, but now I knownot to select reiser or ext3 during installation.

Thanks!

Because the floppy probably doesn't contain the modules required for
those file systems. You should be able to make a modules floppy and
select the modules you want used, but I've never had to do that. I
think
the SUSE books cover the procedure, and I've seen it in some
newsgroups
as well . . .

You're welcome -- glad you got it figured out. BTW, you can convert
the
ext2 to an ext3 file system, see this page for SUSE 9.2:
