Also those missing menu items will often appear after a reboot.
I've installed apps only to find no icon to launch it, so I shell
out and launch from there. Since I'm running a tablet that I take
home at night, I power off to go home. Next day when I power it backon then I get the icons from the apps I installed the day before.

....just an observation.

ctrl - alt - backspace will usually do the trick. That restarts x.
