Hello, there. I seem to have problems with newer releases of SuSE Linux. Without changing the computer, the facts are: Version 9.3 No problems (currently re-installed and still working fine) 10.1 Sometimes the computer had to be started a second time, since the GUI wasn't starting up correctly. 10.3 The GUI won't start up most of the times (KDE and Gnome as well). It seems sometimes that there is still a reaction on the screen, but that most of the monitor is frozen. The only way to work is to start the "fail safe" option to get to the konsole, which is always working. All versions mentioned above are from the "box" of SuSE and all registered my graphics card as SiS 660. The phone support of SuSE told me that there was some change in the addressing of graphics cards lately. Maybe a software bug with the actual release? Try booting the workstation up in runlevel 3. You can change this by going into YaST|Runlevel Services Change to Expert Mode and set the default runlevel to 3. Exit and restart and you will now be boot up to a bash environment. Login and then execute 'startx' to get to the graphical X environment. When you're finished, logout of your X session to be taken back to the bash shell. Some good commends to know of in bash are 'logout' 'reboot' and 'shutdown'. Try if this makes any difference for you, it could be a timing problem that you are experiencing with your graphics adapter. Also be sure that your BIOS and SUSE Linux are fully up to date. Are you using a driver from SUSE or from your graphics card manufacturer? -- ___________________________________________ Niclas Ekstedt, CNA/CNE/CNS/CLS Systems Engineer/NSC Sysop Telindus Sweden AB |

Hello, Mr. Ekstedt. I have already tried this little trick and indeed the probability of the errors with KDE seems to be smaller if I start it from the konsole. As it is, it was almost everytime with "startx" that I could get into the GUI. Unfortunately, this solution isn't very reliable either. The driver of the graphics card came along with SuSE (I suppose). What could I look up to be sure? Martin,
your problems could indicate a disk problem. Run smartctl to see if there are errors. Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Hello, Uwe. Do you mean that the DVD has a problem or the hard disk? Is "smartctl" a command to be used at the bash-shell? I can only remember a menu item of Yast called "media test" or something like that. Martin,
the hard disk. Become root on a console, then type smartctl --all /dev/hda if your disk is /dev/hda. Check the output for errors like "reallocated sectors" or some such. Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Thank you for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I have no internet at home and cannot check it now. Maybe I cannot look up the thread for some time since I took a week off work. But if it's the hard disk, why can I run SuSE 9.3, now that I have re-installed it? Mrtin,
just run smartctl and see if it throws errors. I was simply suggesting a possible cause, I'm not necessarily right :-) Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Well if you were using a driver from the manufacturer, you would have installed it manually, and not through YaST, so that you would probably have remembered. Anyway, I see that Uwe have you checking the disk, if that turns out OK, then I would suggest you download the latest driver available for your graphics card and give that a shot. -- ___________________________________________ Niclas Ekstedt, CNA/CNE/CNS/CLS Systems Engineer/NSC Sysop Telindus Sweden AB |

Hello again. I've found smartctl in the smartmon package at my computer at home. the checking of the harddisk as recommended was astonishly fast, but there were no error reports. SuSE 9.3 is still working excellent, but I have some problems with an archive DVD of a newspaper and a simple spreadsheet I changed last under SuSE 10.3 --- now the OpenOffice.calc wouldn't open it because of a formatting error in row 2, column 2617 (??). I hope that the installation of driver is easily done, but a friend told me it had to be integrated into the kernel, and that sounds like hard work. Unfortunately, I have no access to the website where the driver can be downloaded, as the company I'm working for seems to be blocking the site. So I just have to see if an acquaintance can download it. Thanks for trying, Martin -- martin92 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ martin92's Profile: http://forums.novell.com/member.php?userid=809 View this thread: http://forums.novell.com/showthread.php?t=293257 |
