Default character map?

Does SuSE have a character map like what is available on Windows? I want to
make a few international characters now and then like the ~n (n-yay in
Spanish) or the various e` in French.
How can I do this with my English keyboard? I know that in Windows, you
just hold down the Alt key and press 0 and 3 other numbers to get what you
want. What do you do in Linux?

After looking around, I finally found something, KCharSelect (found it
under Utilities > Desktop > KCharSelect). It still does not have keyboard
shortcuts though but it's better than nothing.

I'm using KDE and I have SuSE 10.0.

Doing it the hard way. Under the KDE Control Panel (aka Personal
Settings), go to Regional & Accessibility -> Keyboard Layout ->
Xkb Options. Then scroll down and find Compose Key.. and in my case
I chose the Right Windows key (choose what you want to use).

Then to do ñ you hit Right Windows + ~ followed by n

To make a ô you hit Right Windows + ^ followed by o

etc...

I type "Alt Gr"+"]" followed by "n" and it gives: ñ
Ã* ó ú á é are obtained by "Alt Gr"+ ";" followed by the vowel
ü is obtained by "Alt Gr"+ "[" followed by u
µ is "Alt Gr" + "m"
ß is "Alt Gr" + "s"

I leave the Ñ and accented capitals for you to find out :-)

Now you owe me a cerveza. ;-)

Cheers,

Now if only my keyboard at an Alt Gr key! My point is that
there are easier ways to get the job done besides what the
OP suggested.
