Default KPowersave and APC UPS

Is KPowersave supposed to be able to detect a UPS connected to the
computer ? I have an APC Backup UPS XS 1500 connected to the computer
with a USB port for monitoring. I see the KPowersave program in the
panel tray. If I disconnect the UPS from the A/C power and let it run
for awhile, I do not notice that KPowersave tells me anything about it
being disconnected.

Naturally I am looking for a solution which will automatically shut me
down when the A/C power is lost and the UPS battery level gets critical,
as well as being able to notify me when the A/C power is lost, when the
UPS battery level is low etc. etc. I do not know whether KPowersave can
do this, whether I have to configure it somehow for my APC UPS, whether
it is just not capable of handling my APC UPS, or whether I have not
tested it correctly or not. Maybe someone knows how to use it and what
its capabilities are.

I do know of apcupsd, and see it in Yast as a software install, and have
installed it on another distro successfully. I also see a software
install for gnome-power-manager, which I also have working on another
distro, but I do not know whether or not that will work under KDE and
OpenSuse 10.2. Perhaps someone knows the answer to using either of these
on OpenSuse 10.2.

Don't use Kpowersaved use apcupsd
It works outside of kde or gnome or whatever
It just works
