Default Firefox and JavaScript 1.4

Hello all,

I have an issue that has me quite confused.

I am enrolled in online university courses and the school uses an
application called WebTycho to present its courses online. One of the
requirements for using the application is JavaScript 1.5.

If you go to the website (http://tychousa.umuc.edu) you will see a link
button at the bottom called "Check your browser" which verifies your
browser/system and tells you if anything does not meet the requirements.

The problem is this:

If I install Firefox as provided by SuSE Linux and run this browser test I
am told that I am using JavaScript 1.4. Unfortunately, this disqualifies
me from using the application.

To solve this problem I downloaded Firefox from the Mozilla site and sure
enough, when I run the browser check it shows that I have JavaScript 1.5,
and all is well in the world.

Since the standalone version of Firefox shows JavaScript 1.5 I am assuming
that it does not rely on the SuSE OS to provide it, rather it comes
bundled in Firefox.

My question is this: why does SuSE use JavaScript 1.4 in its version of
Firefox, and is there any way to change this behavior?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I think that one can install either 1.4 or 1.5 when installing suse 10.1
I have 1.5 installed.

G,

Do you know what package provides it? A search through YaST returns hits
for kdebindings and oldrhino. I know rhino is JavaScript written in Java,
but that isn't what I'm looking for here.

Thanks for the reply.

How does one even tell what version of JavaScript one has? Doesn't that
come bundled with the browser? It sounds more like you are talking
about Java which has a version 1.4 and 1.5 rather than JavaScript.

Darrell,

I am in fact talking about JavaScript. The latest version of JavaScript is
1.5, and yes it does seem to be part of the browser. Go to
http://www.mozilla.org/js/ to learn more about it if you like.

To tell what version of JavaScript you have, go to the link from my
original post:

http://tychousa.umuc.edu

and click on the "Check your browser" link at the bottom of the page. It
will open another window with a synopsis of your browser's capabilities,
namely your Java version, JavaScript version, and whether or not you have
the Flash plugin installed.

Ah, thanks. I thought maybe there was some internal way within Firefox
to check.

Firefox (1.5.0.6) and Galeon have Javascript 1.4 while Konqueror (3.5.1)
and Opera (9.0) have Javascript 1.5 on my system.

Darrell,

SeaMonkey also has 1.4 while Mozilla has 1.5. The funny thing about
Firefox is if you get it directly from Mozilla via the normal download, it
has 1.5, which leads me to believe SuSE retrofits their bundled version
with 1.4 for some reason.

I didn't check SeaMonkey until you mentioned it. Mine also has
JavaScript 1.4 but while it says Java is enabled, it also says N/A for
the Java version.

I think you are correct about Suse.

D,
I am sorry, it was my mistake. I was talking about Java SDK 1.5 and 1.4
(which one can choose) not JavaScript...
(I have no idea of what Javascript version I have with Firefox).

Sorry again

firefox 2.0 rc1 has javascript 1.7

If you are brave enough to test you can download it from
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/bonecho/all-rc.html

I hope a release candidate still is near ready for release,
and not redefined by M$ with their vista rc1 :-)
