Audacity startup fails

When I try to start Audacity up Having installed from the SuSE DVD, it
first asks me what language, then aborts with the message

audacity: conf.c:24448: snd_config_search: Assertion `config && key`
failed.
Aborted

Can someone explain what I haven't done, or what I'm doing wrong.
