Start with the KDE Desktop Configuration panel. [If you're not running KDE, then you might as well stop here and ignore the rest of this.] Right mouse click on the desktop. This open the "Configure - KDesktop" panel. Click on the "Screen Saver" tab. Make sure "Start Automatically" is checked, and that "After:" specifies a reasonable amount of time. |

It does start If I lock the desktop or switch users. Setting is 4 minutes. Start auto checked. tried several different screen savers Could the monitor shutdown timings have some effect? It is enabled and standby= 44 minutes,Suspend after = disabled and Power off = 70 That seems to be working. |

You might also have a look at the "Advanced Options" panel, but I don't think the "Screen Corner Options" could be the problem, and I would hate to suggest that you change the priority! > Could the monitor shutdown timings have some effect? All screen corner options are "NO ACTION" the priorty is low Tried changing priorty. Would not change. Always goes back to low Note I have a bluetooth module running that frequently refreshes the icon in the tray. could that be keeping the screen save from kicking in?????? |

jwrl,
did you try the "Test" button to see if the screen saver works at all? Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Test button works fine, locksession works. It just won't kick on when it should on timed out with no action. Very wierd Its like some deamon is not running. But I'm new And don't have a clue where to look. I did a little work with Unix long ago so I'm very very rusty. I want to move away from Windoz but I need to find some help. I do Windos development so I can't just quit cold turkey. I want to run Windoz in a virtual machine under Linux. But If I can't get a screen saver to work...... |

I do not think any daemons would normally do that. As I understand it, the screen saver is looking only for keyboard and mouse activity. For example, if I start a "slide show" in GwenView, and sit back to enjoy the show, the screen saver will still activate after the idle interval (assuming I do not touch the keyboard or move the mouse) even though the system is obviously quite busy. I'm not sure where to look, either. The only thing I can think of is that somehow, your keyboard or mouse is keeping your system from appearing "idle" to the screen saver. Here's a weird experiment! Set your idle time down to 1 minute, unplug your mouse and keyboard, and see what happens. Actually, something else just popped into my head. I think there is a bios setting on some computers that causes a system to "wake up" if there is any activity on an Ethernet port. Perhaps it's worth a look to see if yours has such an option, and how it is set. |
