Not free, but VMWare is pretty much your only real option here if you're
looking to emulate W98 in its entirety. If you just want to run certain
W98 applications on Linux, have a look at WINE, though it can be
difficult to get running.

An opensource emulator is wine, but works only with certain applications,
and maybe can get some difficulties with Win98 applications, but if you
have a legal installation CD of windows 98 you can download VMWare Player
and ask someone with a legal installation of VMWare workstation to create
the virtual machine for you. But I'm just guessing. I'm not sure if you
can legally create a virtual machine and then run it in another PC.

VMWare is free. The server and player are all free and the workstation
is free for thirty days. That thirty days is enough time to make all
necessary VMWare virtual machines you need and the run them with the Player.

See the second link in my sig.

Free as in beer, not free as in freedom. He asked for Open, not zero cost

OK. It's not open source, I didn't say it was. But it's free as beer
like you said. And it works. Any windows run on it.

If one wants freedom as in speech, why run windows in the first place?

VMWare player is free. You could modify it to run your OS.

I'll use the term "libre" for open source from here to distinguish it
from free as in beer. That said, this article describes how to modify
the *vmx* files for a guest operating system, which are equivalent to a
config file. It has nothing to do with hacking the VMWare Player source
code. VMWare Player is still binary only, so no, it isn't libre .

That said, it works very very well, which is why I recommended it, I'm
not Richard Stallman when it comes to only using open products, I use
eDirectory after all .

Yes.. free "windows" like environment for running things natively
on Linux.

This would only allow you to install a licensed copy of Win98. So.. not
exactly free.
