Default Protected packages

Ok, it has become apparent to me that when one establishes "Protected
Packages" such as one would have after adding DVD viewing capability, that
upgrades and dependencies with Yast installed packages become unresolved.
Unresolved to the point that they no longer work. The fix is to
re-establish Yast packages dependencies. But then, all the work one did to
make DVD's play is lost because of resolving Yast package dependencies.
Third party packages are bound to conflict with Yast upgrades. What say
the experts as to how one resolves this issue?

Hm.... Not here. What exactly did you do? All you need to do to watch DVDs is to install
libdvdcss.

That's good to know about viewing DVD's, but that wasn't my concern.
Concern is that installation of 3rd party applications with their updated
libraries become unresolved dependencies for Yast. And when security fixes,
patches, updates are installed through Yast, these unresolved dependencies
get replaced therefore making 3rd party applications unuseable. That is if
you choose to resolve the unresolved dependencies, or protected packages in
order to make good the mentioned updates. How does one resolve the
conflict of 3rd party dependencies with the updated dependencies without
loosing either, 3rd party applications or updates(where only an unresolved
dependency may be a library that is older than the 3rd party application?)
If Yast takes the guess work out of updates, using third party applications
puts the guess work back into the use of Yast. Maybe that I'm making more
out of this than needs to be, but I am experiencing this problem. To the
point that I have actually lost my /boot partition. Only to be resolved by
running 'Installation Update' and Yast updates. Yast replaced unresolved
dependencies and left my 3rd party applications unuseable. Help or set me
straight. Thanks. Tom

Tom,

OIC, it was a more general question.
I don't think there's a way around it. You have to be very careful when you install
software. You are pretty much on the safe side if you add third party repositories like
packman or the guru to the Yast installation sources and keep installing through Yast.
As soon as you install RPMs manually, you easily run into dependency hell. It often helps
to find more recent versions then.
If you install apps without using an RPM, you can reinstall these apps and often the
dependencies will get resolved during the reinstallation/recompilation.

Does this help? At least a little? :-)

Sorry, posted before I actually typed anything. Your answer covers what my
concern was and verifies for my that my observation was correct. Thanks.
