C compiler cannot create executables

I upgraded to 10.1beta2 (x64) from 9.3 and when I attempt to compile i get:
configure:2812: error: C compiler cannot create executables

config.log shows:

/tmp/ccM4YeY5.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccM4YeY5.s:7: Error: bad register name `%rbp'
/tmp/ccM4YeY5.s:9: Error: bad register name `%rsp'
