When I try using the xmms that was installed with Suse Linux 10.0, it
doesn't work. When I launch xmms, it outputs these errors: /usr/lib/xmms/General/libir.so: undefined symbol: irapp_thread /usr/lib/xmms/Visualization/libmadspin.so: undefined symbol: config_window The xmms window shows up anyway. When I try to play a song, though, after picking a song using the file open dialog, it outputs these errors: Gtk-WARNING **: invalid cast from `(unknown)' to `GtkObject' Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtkobject.c: line 1034 (gtk_object_set_data): assertion `GTK_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed. It doesn't play anything or even try to load the mp3. The version I have install is 1.2.10. I tried downloading the source and installing that. It gave me the following error when I tried to build: checking for GTK - version >= 1.2.2... no *** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found *** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in *** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the *** full path to gtk-config. configure: error: *** GTK+ >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first *** I don't have an rpm for gtk+ installed. I do have gtk-1.2.10-888 installed, but it doesn't seem to like that. I downloaded the source for gtk+ and tried to install that, but I got the message: checking for BASE_DEPENDENCIES... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.8.5 atk >= 1.0.1 pango >= 1.9.0 cairo >= 0.9.2) were not met. Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you Sure enough, the installed glib2 is only 2.8.1-3. I can't find updates to this rpm anywhere on novell's site. Is there an obvious solution I am missing? I can't believe I need to go to this much effort to use xmms on a fresh install of the product. Thanks, John |

John,
remove the xmms stuff you installed from the original Suse CD/DVD, then install these from Packman: http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=675 The XMMS-lib-mad rpm will add MP3 support. Nice! Thank you very much.
Now all we need to do is get that into the Suse distro... > John, > > remove the xmms stuff you installed from the original Suse CD/DVD, then > install these from Packman: > http://packman.links2linux.de/?action=675 > > The XMMS-lib-mad rpm will add MP3 support. > > HTH > Uwe > > > -- > Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp > Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

I doubt it, distributors see legal issues delivering MP3 support. Novell is developing their own MP3 solution, Banshee. This will probably debut in Novell Linux Desktop 10, not sure about Opensuse.
