Default Suse 9.3 vs WindowMakaer vs Gnome

I have WindowMaker set as the default wm for Gnome in Suse 9.3. When I log
in I get a spinning clock until I do 'kill wmaker;wmaker' OR 'kill
metacity; wmaker'. The it starts up.

Dose anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

More info...

All I have to do is issue 'wmaker' from Run Application. When Gnome
starts, the background that Metacity uses is present which seems to mean,
to me, that Metacity is trying to start even though wmaker
/usr/X11R6/bin/wmaker is listed as both the current and default wm in
gconf.

Any and all help appreciated.
