Default NTFS

Are there any easy solutions to writing to ntsf drives from suse?

I don't want to format all my drives to fat, i could create a small fat
partition on one of my hard drives but i would prefer to be able to write to
all of my drives.

thanks
don

Short answer: No.

Longer answer: Microsoft refuses to release the details/API for NTFS so
there will never be 100% *reliable* support. There are some options
(googling should find them) but I, personally, would never trust any
of them simply because of the above fact.

However, if you have two computers -- one Linux and one Windows -- you
can network them and write wherever you want via Samba. That way,
Windows is writing to it's filesystems and you avoid the problem. But,
if this is all on one box, that's not an option . . .

Hi Don,

for now you are better advised not to use writing on ntfs, but to make small
fat32 partition. For latest informations on status of linux-ntfs project
youcan look at:
http://www.linux-ntfs.org/
here is current status

There is another option - you can read the data both ways

Linux can of course read NTFS partitions and rfs /rfsgui can read reiser
partitions under windows - so you can do two way transfer

see http://p-nand-q.com/e/reiserfs.html

In addition to what the other replies said, there's also a project
named "Captive" building a wrapper to run the original Windows NTFS
driver on Linux with the help of WinE (the Windows Emulator).
See http://www.jankratochvil.net/project/captive/

I thought captive was dead... anyway.. SUSE really needs to
add FUSE... maybe in a future release.

Must have missed the obituary. How did it die?

In practice, there is.

Obviously, it is not.

Just, it looks strange:
wrapper for wireless,
wrapper for NTFS,
wrapper for windows applications (wine),
more wrappers that I don't know about ...

Is that where the Linux is going?

Well there was a time when it wasn't using FUSE and
it seemed to have died. Nice to see it's alive
and well (apparently).. except for SUSE's refusal
to add FUSE to their dist.
