Hi, I am a 1 week old linux newbie running Suse 10.0 and am still
trying to get to grips with the system, so please be gentle. I would like to share music from the iMac over my home network via the iTunes daap protocol. Samba sharing is working fine so there is no problem with the network. I think that there is a problem with the ports . I have installed both libopendaap and mtdaap and also tunesbrowser to access the share but cannot see any configuration possibilities under tunesbrowser. I have read that TCP 3689 and UDP 5353 should be open but cannot find where to enable these ports. I am not the admin for the computer but opening the firewall configuration under Yast does not seem to give me the option of opening ports. In short, am I on the right lines or is there a better way of doing this? Thanks for your help, Ed |

I suggest (temporarily) disabling it (Yast -> Security and Users -> Firewall -> Stop Firewall Now [wait here]), then seeing if you can share your iMac's music. If this works, then the firewall settings need tweeking (you have already identified the required protocols and ports). In the same Yast Firewall screen, select Allowed Services (on the left), then the Advanced button. The next dialog shows four entry fields, one of which is for the TCP protocol, another for the UDP protocol. Enter just the two port _numbers_ you have identified in the appropriate fields and press the Ok button. Then press Next. You should see your protocols and ports (and possibly other stuff) under the Open Services, Ports, and Protocols section of the next screen. Press Accept. This will close the Firewall Configuration screen -- you will need to reenter the configuration screen and restart your firewall (press Start Firewall Now). Once again test your sharing of iMac music to be sure you've properly solved your problem. If you've led a good life, all should be well. I hope this helps. Bill W |
