what's available that can let you organize your digital photos into slide
shows like comes with WinXP?

kuickshow has slideshow support. Just put the photos you want in a folder.
Then run kuickshow and navigate to that folder. Then configure kuickshow to
run a slideshow.

If you use KDE, Gwenview is the default viewer. It has a nice and easy
slideshow configuration, and with the partial KDE integration, this is
probably as close to the WinXP feature as possible.
Many other picture apps offer a slideshow function, fSpot, digiKam, I
assume Gimp can do it, too.
