Hello. I have SuSE 9.3 and after the instalation i had mp3 running without
any problems. I usually used amarok or xmms. A few days ago, after I uninstalled some apps, mp3 just stopped working. If i try to use amarok he simply runs the entire playlist in a few seconds. As does juk or kaboodle. I've tryied every media player possible! xmms doesn't even opens the mp3 file. I must have screwed up something, but i really don't know what. I've run the ALSA config and I test the sound successfully. I'm also able to hear CDs and every sound of the OS. Any thoughts? Thanks |

As does juk or kaboodle. I run 10.0 x86_64. I'm not sure if there might be other reasons for that behavior, but I know what does that here. I have my mp3s stored on an external drive, attached via usb. If I forget to turn on the power for the drive or turn it on too late in the boot sequence, the system doesn't recognize the drive. In order of what works best to what works less well, here's what works here. Restarting the computer, with the drive running always fixes the problem. Ending your session & relogging in to a new session often fixes it. Once in awhile, after you're into kde (or whatever), shutting the drive off & back on will get it recognized. If you're using a separate drive for storage, I'd check the drive, power connections & cabling. If you're using an existing partition that otherwise is recognized, then maybe some of the sound dependencies were also uninstalled & need to be reinstalled. HTH Bill K |

What do you get when you run the following command in a console? rpm -qa |grep mad -- sktsee |

When i run that commmand i get kdemultimedia3-mad-3.4.2-11.pm.0 mad-0.15.1b-31 i've read some other post about mp3 problems where the "mad" package was refered. I re-installed kdemultimedia3-mad-3.4.2-11.pm.0.i586.rpm mad-0.15.1b-31.i586.rpm kdemultimedia3-sound-3.4.2-11.pm.0.i586.rpm just in case but didn't notice any changes. I also found out that i can hear .mpc without any problems. Don't really know what to do... i'm considering a full system re-instalation. I've also tryied a repair booting the Suse 9.3 DVD. Feel free to email me. Thanks, fredd |

Are there any of SuSE versions of the same packages available? I run pretty much stock distribution so I don't know how well the packman versions work in regard to preserving dependencies. From what I gather, they work pretty well, but when you mix-n-match packages from different sources, there's an increased chance of introducing some instability in to the system. I'd try to go with SuSE versions, if possible, to rule out problems arising from the packman packages. Here's what I got as far as mad libraries: libtunepimp-mad-0.3.0-6 kdemultimedia3-mad-3.4.0-14 mad-0.15.1b-31 python-mad-0.5.1-95 xmms-lib-mad-1.2.10-68 *You need this installed to play mp3 in xmms mad-devel-0.15.1b-31 k3b-mad-0.11.22-3 gstreamer-plugins-extra-mad-0.8.8-13 bmp-plugins-mad-0.9.7-10 You also might try the console mp3 player, mp3blaster to see test whether the problem is global, or just affects GUI players. -- sktsee |

Now i just have to make another app work aswell... i > really don't like RealPlayer ![]() > Thanks I'm not sure about xmms, but the SUSE 10.0 version of amarok (1.3, I think) gives you a choice of audio engines. Default install used the helix engine. YAST "upgraded my box from helix to the same version of RealPlayer. ;-) Suddenly no sound & RealPlayer's engine was not added as a choice. So, I switched to the xine engine. Works fine. Maybe that'll work for you? Bill K |

I unistalled everything, including sound libraries e instaled them back using kpackage that, unlike yast, showed me unsatisfied dependencies. I've not been able to use amarok. i can't install the aRts engine. using aKode or xine, amarok run an entire playlist in just a few seconds. And no soud is played. Unfortunatly i'm a bit swamped with work, so i can't spend a lot of time solving this, but the essencial is achieved. mp3 up and running! Thanks for all the help |
