But I could not open the KDE or GNOME desktop.when i reboot the start is going fine until the grafic interface appaers to go black with a cross cursor in the middle and the systeem hangs My screen is configurated as a LCD screen, where am I going wrong. I'm not an expert with Linux an I think that the solution is a simple one. Please can you help me Greetings and Thanks Frans Tames |

Please can you help me > Greetings and Thanks > > Frans Tames Can you boot to runlevel 3 by adding the boot parameter to the grub boot screen, on the screen with the countdown marker and choice of OS`s press F2 ( I think ) and a parameter line will appear where you can add additional commands that are passed to the kernel on boot, so to get to runlevel 3 with no X server just type: init 3 ( just the number "3" on its own would have the desired effect as well but adding the init just reminds you what it is for ) this will be echoed on the line and SuSE will start up to a command prompt, this is a one off though and needs to be added at every boot so it will not alter anything permanently. When you get to the login prompt login as root, enter the root password and then type: startx see if that works or if not does it print any errors? If you still end up with a black screen with the mouse cursor on and can go no further then try pressing Ctrl+Alt+<backspace> ( this kills the x server ) this should get you back to the command prompt and you might see any error messages. If there are no errors on screen try Ctrl+Alt+F10 and see if any error messages are printed there, if there are still no blatantly obvious errors then have a look in your home dir at the hidden file .xsession-errors and see if some app is crashing and stopping the full boot of KDE/Gnome, if you are not that comfortable at the command line then have a go with mc ( just type mc at the prompt ) this is a dual pane file-manager and makes it easier to open docs and logs for reading, with this you can browse the whole file system, have a look in /var/logs at the files: messages, kdm.log, xorg.0.log ( and previous ones xorg.1.log etc... ) see if anything jumps out at you and post a snippet here so we can see if there is a cure.
