Hello,
I have SuSE Linux 9.3, installed on a laptop with Intel P4 2.8GHz and intel chipset. Until last week, the laptop had 512MB of RAM, and as I am using it as a demonstration computer with various servers running, I thought that upgrading the memory would make things a little bit faster. I put in another 512MB DIMM. The first thing that I noticed was that the computer became REAL slow, it took more than 25 minutes to boot into the GUI!!! Googling around I found somewhere that perhaps the bios could not cache all the extra memory (a bios bug? I wouldn't know, the laptop is a noname one so bios updates is rather out of the question). Any way I found somewhere that I could instruct the kernel to ignore memory above a set boundary so I put the parameter mem=960m in grub. So the laptop is now running at top speed, seeing only 960MB of memory out of 1024, BUT... I lost the sound. The laptop has an AC97 codec made by intel and the module used is snd_intel8x0. lspci gives 0000:00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 02) dmesg | tail -4 gives ACPI: PCI interrupt 0000:00:1f.5[B] -> GSI 3 (level, low) -> IRQ 3 PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:1f.5 to 64 ALSA sound/pci/intel8x0.c:2178: AC'97 warm reset still in progress? [0x6] Intel ICH: probe of 0000:00:1f.5 failed with error -5 when I try to setup the sound through yast which detects the card I get An error occured during the installation of 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller The kernel module snd_intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. When I run alsaconf as ROOT, alsaconf DOES detect the card, runs configuration and then it tells me that the card is configured it DOES load the module but when it comes to playing the test sound nothing comes out. Alsaconf exits saying ALSA lib confmisc.c:560 snd_determine_driver) could not open controlfor card 0 ALSA lib conf.c:3479 _snd_config_evaluate) functionsnd_func_card_driver returned error: Permission denied ALSA lib confmisc.c:392 snd_func_concat) error evaluating stringsALSA lib conf.c:3479 _snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_concatreturned error: Permission denied ALSA lib confmisc.c:955 snd_func_refer) error evaluating nameALSA lib conf.c:3479 _snd_config_evaluate) function snd_func_referreturned error: Permission denied ALSA lib conf.c:3948 snd_config_expand) Evaluate error: Permission deniedALSA lib pcm.c:2090 snd_pcm_open_noupdate) Unknown PCM defaultaplay: main:533: audio open error: Permission denied But also in the end it says Now ALSA is ready to use. For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer. Have a lot of fun! Which of course is a lie. The permission denied message is strange because as I said I am running it as root. The sound works on windoze xp (dual boot system) Please advise |
