After installing openSUSE 10.3 32 bit, the Gnome Updater applet
keeps telling me "Additional updates available". The additional update it is offering is in fact the package "openmotif22-libs" which according to its description is a 64 bit package and only needed for software which doesn't compile with the latest OpenMotif version, so I don't think I want that. Is there a way to tell the Updater once and for all that I am not interested and that it should only attract my attention again if there is something *else* to update? Something like the "do not offer this update again" checkbox in *cough* Windows? aTdHvAaNnKcSe -- Tilman Schmidt E-Mail: tilman@imap.cc Bonn, Germany - In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. Tilman,
what if you set it to "Taboo" in Yast's software management? Uwe -- Novell Support Connection Volunteer SysOp Please don't send me support related e-mail unless I ask you to do so. |

Starting YaST from the Gnome menu now opens a window called "YaST-Kontrollzentrum" (YaST Control Center?) containing many icons. One of these is labelled "Software installieren oder löschen" ("Install or remove software") so I guess it would correspond to the old Software Management pane. But clicking on that just opens (after lengthy reading of caches, loading of package lists, etc.) a window titled "Paketauswahl" (Package Selection) which is the same I get when clicking on "Details" in the openSUSE Updater window, and just allows me to move packages between "Available" and "Installed". I cannot see any way of setting something to "Taboo" like with the old YaST. Tilman,
that's just the ugly Gnome yast. I really tried using Gnome for two or three weeks now on one machine and again I ran back to KDE <G> Try launching Yast in a console. The handling should be more like the "old" Yast. I assume you can also launch the Qt-Yast, but I simply don't know how yet. The handling should be more like the "old" Yast. I assume you can also launch the Qt-Yast, but I simply don't know how yet. Don't you read release notes? :-p You have to edit /etc/sysconfig/yast2, changing the WANTED_GUI line from "auto" to "qt". A command line option would have been too simple, I guess. Unfortunately, it doesn't help. I set the "openmotif22-libs" package to "taboo" in Qt-YaST, restarted opensuse-updater-gnome, and it still displays a yellow gearwheel saying "Additional updates available". When I ask for details, it now shows the Qt-YaST as selected in /etc/sysconfig/yast2, but the "taboo" mark on openmotif22-libs just doesn't stick. Other ideas? Bugzilla time? Since I hardly ever use Yast for software, I probably forgot immediately or didn't even recognize the hint: > You have to edit /etc/sysconfig/yast2, changing the WANTED_GUI line from > "auto" to "qt". Bugzilla time? Let me see what I can find. I assume installing it isn't an option? I usually just let it (Smart, in my case) update and change whatever it wants. There are some bizarre dependency issues anyway (try deselecting the "games" pattern and keep the 3d effects during installation). It just doesn't feel right. Another option would be to get rid of the updater applet and run "online_update -k" from cron to get update notifications by mail like I do on my servers, or even to do away entirely with notifications and just run "yast2 online_update" (or some "smart" equivalent) manually whenever I feel like it. Those are the alternatives I'm contemplating if the applet cannot be tweaked to do what I want. The other is that in suse 10.2 smart added automatically lots of repositories and their mirrors. This is unfortunately not so anymore in 10.3. Any clues? Cheers, -G- |

I usually just add a couple of repos from my favorite mirror which is very reliable. If you use download.opensuse.org, that should always resolve to a mirror anyways.
