Hi,
I installed 10.1 and after Online Update Configuration I got assigned: http://gd.tuwien.ac.at/linux/suse.com/suse/update/10.1/ If I run from yast: Online Update, I see that there are 2 recommended patches in blue: dhcdbd - bugfix for dhcdbd (DHCLIENT_HOSTNAME_OPTION) dhcp - bugfix for dhcp (DHCLIENT_HOSTNAME_OPTION) But when I press Accept, the Online Update closes and nothing gets installed. During installation I think that there were 1 or 2 security updates that must have been installed (they do not appear anymore), but I find it strange that the updating does not seem to work anymore. Is there a solution to this? Thanks. -G- |

Vahis - I had already added the additional sources to Packman and Guru following your excellent multimedia instructions (thank you!) which worked perfectly. I didn't do the Online Configuration during the install but afterwards per the Release Notes I did su and "rug refresh" which said it was successful. My Zen Updater went orange this morning and when I tried to update (after adding myself as a permitted user - [as an aside, I'm not crazy about that since I think only root should be permitted to update as in the old YaST Online Update]) I got the Unhandled Exception error: "Failed to look up resolvable w/ id '56088'" The Zen Updater (orange icon) showed something like 27 updates available but failed as above. I then ran YaST Online Update and it brought down about 7 updates for dhcp. I'm confused. Should I run the zmd/rug commands per your website now or do something else? Malke -- It is very dark. It may now be, I'm studying this with installing and It could be that same with updating, I'm not sure: Seems that when I go with zen GUI installer for a package it shows all the versions of that package for different processor architectures but it does not show which is which. I just tested with a couple of packages > trial & error till the last one of course was the right one. Could be that the same goes with updates. Try to go with the rug, here's a page with examples, look at rug patches and rug up run rug patches and run rug up for those http://en.opensuse.org/Examples_using_rug I'm not sure if this gets you anywhere since I never had that problem with updates. You could also try to right click the globe > configure > catalogs > untick all but the update one. Vahis -- Sometimes I reply to top posters. Seldom. Thanks, Vahis. I'll switch to rug for now. This isn't that big a deal to me and I'm sure it will all get Worked Out Somehow. :-) I must say that this is the best update to SUSE that I've ever done. I went from 9.3 on both the desktop and the laptop yesterday. Because I keep /home on a separate hard drive (desktop) and partition (laptop) and do a clean install of /, everything went perfectly. Naturally there are always a few niggles, but basically immediately after the install I was back up and running. It was wonderful. Thanks for all your help and your great website. Cheers, Malke -- It is very dark. You are likely to be eaten by a grue. |

Thanks Vahis & Uwe for the comments.
Maybe my zen setup is working but I have no updates to download :-/ and therefore my confusion... Just one more question. In suse 10.0 (and previous versions) when using YOU, the patches would appear in a list on the left hand side of YOU (in red or blue) and auto-tick themselves if they were required. After the update those entries would not appear anymore in the list of patches. Now in 10.1 I still can still see the blue ones self-ticked and in red some security patches which have not been self-ticked (I am assuming that those are not needed; is that right?) This would seem to be more like Yast software management entries (which remained ticked if installed) and unticked if not. Has the YOU behaviour changed this way or is it me just not being able to load the recommended (blue) patches? I tried reloading those patches and they seem to have been reloaded, but the entries remain in YOU. Sorry if my description is a bit sloppy. Thanks for any further insight. -G- |

This gets more confusing...
Now 1) YaST Software Management sees updates (names appear in blue) that Zen does not report (last night it was a new version of cron), AND 2) YaST also shows packages in red (which means that they are newer than any available version in the catalogs -- they are not the ones updated through YOU). I have all the repositories on Refresh and Active. Could it be that the refreshing is not taking place (obviously this may happening for both Yast and Zen). Isn't this strange? -G- |

Every time I go back and look, the same blue and red listings seem to be waiting, but the check marks may not be the same, and sometimes there are a few more items in the blue and/or the red lists. This is in Yast2. I have read in other threads that YaST2 is dead as an updater and no longer works for that function, but is still the default installer. People like Uwe and Vahis have described how to setup other repositories to complete installations and updates. Some people are using Zen, but I read that it has too many problems for newbies like us. I read here and in Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols's DesktopLinux.com column that Smart is easy to setup and use. I have not set it up, yet, but I will next time I reboot into SuSE Linux. Search these forums for instructions about setting it up. I believe Smart is available in YaST2 for installation.
