I wanna go back to 9.3!

Had a crash with 9.3, and it wouldn't repair in the usual manners.
I loaded 10.0 as a new install and my disk partitions weren't writable; I
decided to load 10.1 over 10.0 and it worked beautifully. But: now I can't
log in as root in a gnome or kde session, and apps crash when running them
as root.
How can I go <backwards> without blowing it all away and starting over?
