Yast's "System Update" isn't meant to upgrade to a new release. The best way IMHO is to have your /home on seperate partition, then do a clean install without formatting the /home partition. That's what I do. If you want to upgrade, boot from the most recent CD/DVD and select the upgrade option. Me, I have sufficient bandwidth; I download the network installation boot image, burn it, boot from it and upgrade over the web. It is a matter of 2 hours here. BTW, don't hold your breath tomorrow: I doubt all mirrors will be in sync upon the release, downloading may be a bit slow for a couple of days. I hope you're wrong about the upgrades. It's past time for upgrades to work reliably. The other OS has had very reliable upgrades for 10+ years. Here's hoping. |

But you cannot upgrade a running system through Yast, you *must* boot from the CD/DVD of the newer release. My other box got updated twice this way, and I'll try it again with Suse 10.1 next week. But it does leave a lot of dead files, renamed by the upgrade process, that's why I prefer the clean install. If you are talking about the other OS I am thinking of, the thing that worked most reliably when trying to upgrade was the message telling you that you needed to buy a different version for that. And in hindsight, I consider these cases the luckier ones, considering the trouble I had when the upgrade process actually ran.
