Default Kernel update breaks SUSE 10

Hi

I installed SUSE 10 (64bit download) onto my PC already running XP/SUSE 9.3
with no problems. (9.2 didn't even start from CD). I put 10 into a new
partition and was pleased to see option to start 9.3 in grub.

As part of install I accepted the updates and then all came down and
installed. Since one was a kernel update I reboot. Got messages like
waiting for /dev/sda3 (swap) then /dev/sda11 (root). Couldn't find suse
starting /bin/sh and a shell prompt.

Went into 9.3 and did some cursory comparisons of boot files to those in
9.3 and seemed OK.

Replaced grub with 9.3 version and started again. This time I ignored updates.

All OK except SAX does not size screen properly, starts too big, starts
shrinking then big jump to too small. OK for now, I'll wait till I get
proper drivers. Reboot fine.

Now start YOU, deselect all except kernel update. Download OK, install OK.

Reboot and not start again, same error as before.

Any ideas?

mobo = AsRock K8S8X
RAM = 1G
HD = 1 x 160 Gb SATA (SIS controller)
2 x DVD writers, 1 x NEC 1 x Sony (dual layer)
Nvidia 5700 256Mb

What else needed to know.

It says in the instructions not to update kernel during the initial
installation. You should install first and if you like, update anything
else, but not kernel. After logging in for the first time the
installation is ready to update kernel.

Since I have never done the way you did I don't really know what it
breaks, I just hope someone knows a better answer. Mine would be to
reinstll and leave the kernel update to the point you have logged in.

After the update and if the machine will not boot, try starting with the
boot parameter of:

insmod=ide-generic

See:

Not sure if that will help but might give us a better idea on what might
be happening.
