Default Third party software update policy? Apache, PHP, SSH, ect.

Is there an official suse update policy around?

I'm confused on when packages get updated. I am using 9.2 and the latest
version of Apache2 is at 2.0.50 vs 2.0.55 and
PHP4 is at 4.3.8 vs the latest ar 4.4.1. Both have security fixes I would
like to have.

I can download and compile all of this manually, but the convienence of
precompiled packages is nice.

Should I not expect to see current builds of various software for suse and
build anything critical myself instead of using yast and you?

Thanks.

Hi Ian,

You may want to look at this link:
http://support.novell.com/lifecycle/...port_lifecycle
and this is the link from previous page:
http://support.novell.com/lifecycle/...resupport.html

The practical orientation would be to look in following SUSE releases (9.3
and 10.0) to see what versions are supported there. Somewhere I read that
collection of packages called release doesn't change much to ensure
stability.

I'm not aware of an official policy in writing;
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2005/1...backports.html
reflects my current understanding.

Could this be what you seek?

ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/apache/apache2/9.2-i386

Suse is very conservative about major version updates in YOU, but many
upgrades are available in the "projects" directory. Packman and Guru
also carry newer versions of some packages.

Ahh, that is what I was wondering.

So a package like Apache will be put into a release at a specific version,
and that version number will not change.
But security fixes are backported into it. (For some packages.)

Thanks a lot!
